Clotho the Spinner, Lachesis the Measurer, and Atropos the Cutter; known collectively as the Moirai in Greek Mythology, and Parcae to the Romans, are a trio of goddesses who were said to control the destiny of every mortal and immortal being. They are responsible for spinning, measuring, and cutting the thread of life for each individual.
Being a fan of more modern views, I thought the title was especially witty given the growing irrelevance of string theory in physics. Mans beliefs do come and go.
