This pen and ink is 9×12 and was a great deal of fun drawing. One day soo, this and many many more of my prints will be available through Fortean Giftorium at reasonable pop art prices.

It wasn’t the technique or anything that made it fun. It was the fact that the Nandi Bear has such a wide base of reports that it could be multiple cryptids… or just a boogey man monster to keep kids in the huts at night.

Here is what the robot had to say about them for those who don’t want to do more research since this is new cryptid for them.

The Nandi Bear: A Zoological Inquiry

The Nandi bear, also referred to in various accounts as “kerit,” “chimoset,” or “ngoloko,” is a cryptid said to inhabit the highland regions of East Africa, particularly Kenya and Uganda. While no definitive physical evidence exists to confirm its reality, the persistence of reports from diverse sources—including indigenous traditions, colonial explorers, and hunters—warrants serious scientific consideration. Below, we examine the accounts and attempt to identify the Nandi bear through a zoological lens.

Physical Description

Reports of the Nandi bear describe a creature that shares characteristics with known carnivores:

  • Size: Approximately the size of a large lion, often reported as heavily built.
  • Coloration: Typically dark brown to black fur.
  • Shape: A bear-like body with a short tail, robust limbs, and prominent claws.
  • Head: Descriptions vary but often include a sloping forehead and a powerful jaw, reminiscent of hyenas or prehistoric carnivores.

Behavioral Accounts

Witnesses have ascribed several behaviors to the Nandi bear:

  • Predation: Allegedly attacks livestock and humans, particularly targeting the head, leading to speculation about its powerful bite.
  • Nocturnal Activity: Most sightings occur at night, suggesting a nocturnal lifestyle.
  • Elusiveness: Its ability to evade capture or observation implies a highly developed sense of hearing, sight, or smell.

Cultural and Historical Context

The Nandi bear is deeply rooted in local folklore:

  • The Nandi people, from whom the creature takes its name, have long regarded it as a real and dangerous animal.
  • Early 20th-century European settlers and hunters documented numerous sightings, often treating it as a serious zoological mystery.

Theories and Hypotheses

1. Misidentified Known Species

Several plausible candidates for the Nandi bear exist among known African fauna:

  • Hyena (Crocuta crocuta):
    • A large hyena could explain the sloping forehead and powerful jaws.
    • However, hyenas are well-known to locals, making misidentification less likely.
  • Honey Badger (Mellivora capensis):
    • Aggressive and nocturnal, the honey badger fits some behavioral descriptions but lacks the reported size and build.
  • Baboons (Genus Papio):
    • Large baboons can appear menacing and attack humans but do not match the Nandi bear’s body structure.

2. Relict Prehistoric Species

Some cryptozoologists speculate the Nandi bear could be a surviving species from the Pleistocene epoch:

  • Chalicothere:
    • Extinct hoofed mammals with long claws and a robust build could align with descriptions.
  • Short-Faced Bear (Arctodus simus):
    • Though native to the Americas, a related species might have persisted in Africa.

3. Unknown Carnivore

The possibility exists that the Nandi bear represents an undiscovered species of large carnivore, adapted to the East African highlands:

  • Behavioral Traits:
    • Nocturnal habits and a preference for remote regions could explain its elusiveness.
  • Ecological Role:
    • A solitary apex predator may fill a niche distinct from lions or hyenas.

Scientific Challenges

Efforts to identify or confirm the Nandi bear face significant hurdles:

  • Lack of Physical Evidence: No remains, scat, or definitive tracks have been collected.
  • Limited Sightings: Reliable, detailed observations are rare, and most accounts are anecdotal.
  • Environmental Factors: The dense forests and rugged terrain of the Nandi bear’s purported habitat make systematic study difficult.

Conclusion

While the existence of the Nandi bear remains unproven, the consistency and specificity of reports suggest a zoological phenomenon worthy of further investigation. Whether it is a misidentified species, a relict of the prehistoric past, or an entirely unknown carnivore, the Nandi bear represents a fascinating puzzle at the intersection of cryptozoology and mainstream zoology. Future research, including environmental DNA sampling and expanded field studies, may provide the definitive answer to this enduring mystery.
